Bob Wilson’s Wikipedia – Week Two

Welcome to Bob Wilson’s Wikipedia

Wikipedia has changed the educational landscape as we know it. Gone are the days when knowledge was gained through dusty encyclopedias and local wisdom, hearsay and rumourmongering.

Nowadays, people simply need to access Wikipedia in order to pass off facts as their own, plagiarise beyond all means in academia, sully the reputation of Hollywood movie stars – all in the name of ‘free education for all’.

Wikipedia’s framework is built on the Wikimedia Commons project – a media file repository making available‘public domain and freely-licensed educational media content’ – that is, no ‘copyrighted’ content.

Which is why we see Bob Wilson, a Scottish international goalkeeper, a man with more than 230 Arsenal appearances under his belt, a respected television broadcaster, paying for petrol in Hatfield, Hertfordshire as his official Wikipedia photograph. He isn’t the only one however. There are many, many more…

Here are five of the best that were submitted this week, in no particular order:

Paul Gascoigne

Paul John Gascoigne (born 27 May 1967), commonly referred to as Gazza, is a retired English professional footballer.

Playing in the position of midfield, Gascoigne’s career included spells at Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton and Gansu Tianma, where he scored at least a goal for each of these clubs. He was capped 57 times for the England national football team.

With the dazed look in his eyes, the camera towering over him in a position of authority, luggage in tow and a pipe of Pringles sufficing for the journey, there is only one question to be had: Is Gazza really drunk at an airport?

Dietmar Hamann

Dietmar “Didi” Hamann (born 27 August 1973) is a German footballer who is currently manager at Stockport County.

Throughout his career, he has played for Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Manchester City primarily in a defensive midfield position. He also spent time at Milton Keynes Dons as a player/coach before joining Leicester City as a first team coach.

Hamann spotted in the car park outside Tamworth FC – perhaps he was peddling for a move to “The Lambs” when the camera interrupted him leaving looking, what can only be described as a lamb to the slaughter.

Diego Maradona

Diego Armando Maradona (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈðjeɣo maɾaˈðona]; born 30 October 1960) is a retired Argentine football player and widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time.

Over the course of his professional club career Maradona played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys, setting world-record contract fees. In his international career, playing for Argentina, he earned 91 caps and scored 34 goals.

We all recognise that look in his eyes, the feeling of self-pity over an empty dining table. Poor Diego has been stood up…

Clayton Blackmore

Clayton Graham Blackmore (born 23 September 1964 in Neath, Glamorgan is a former Welsh international footballer.

He was a combative player known for his attacking free kicks and a utility player who excelled at full back and in central defence but could play equally well in midfield or as an emergency forward.

Having come through the United youth system he won the first of his 39 caps for Wales after only two first team appearances at Old Trafford. He has the unique distinction of having worn every number for United from 2 to 11 (under the old system of the first XI wearing shirts numbered 1–11, until players were assigned with a squad number to keep all season).

After a twelve year career with United, he became a bit of a journeyman with his days played out across Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Barnsley, Notts County, Leigh RMI, Bangor City, Porthmadog and Neath Athletic – How the mighty fall.

Clayton Blackmore looking very much like the Disney simulacra of a modern day footballer. Cool shades Clayt…

Louis Briscoe

Louis Andrew Briscoe (born 2 April 1988) is an English footballer who plays for Conference National club Mansfield Town. His playing position is either as a Striker or on the right or left wing.

He started his career with Football League side Port Vale in 2005, but failed to make an impact and moved on to non-league Leek Town two years later. After brief spells with Hednesford Town, Gresley Rovers, Stafford Rangers, and Ilkeston Town, he won a move to Conference club Mansfield Town in 2009.

In what must be one of the best Wikipedia photographs of a professional footballer, we see Louis Briscoe tanked up on Tequila on a Greek Island.

Incredible…
